PUBLISHING ITINERARY

Terms and Conditions

Rates are based on the standard Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) and Writer’s Market rates.

The rate card is only a rough guide. Every project is unique, so rates vary depending on the scope, subject, shape of the manuscript or content, etc. For more information on rates, read the blog post on finding the right professional for your project and another post on nonfiction editing standards.

Rates and terms may change without notice.

Payment details are included in the agreement if we decide to work together.

There is a minimum flat rate of $35 for small projects.

There is a 50 percent rush fee outside normal turnaround time.

To determine the scope of the project and the level of editing that’s best for you, please fill out the author evaluation form.

A sample edit (up to 1,000 words) is recommended before starting the project to better estimate the level of editing and rates. The middle part of the manuscript will be selected for a sample edit. The amount of the sample edit will be applied to the balance of the full project.

Full payment in advance is required for projects less than $250. You may also pay up front in full for projects of any size. In that case, your edited manuscript will be released to you immediately after completion.

There is at least a 50 percent deposit prior to starting projects totaling $250 or more with balance payable before release of the fully edited manuscript. A watermarked PDF version with final invoice will be sent to you. When balance payment is received, the unwatermarked copy in DOC(X) format will be released to you.

For projects with a turnaround time of three weeks or more, 50 percent is due before starting the project, followed by 25 percent at the halfway point. Add the remaining 25 percent before release of the fully edited manuscript.

Payment installments and other arrangements or options such as reduced scope (including longer turnaround time and partial edit at the line editing and copyediting levels) are also available.

For editing, I use the Track Changes function in Microsoft Word. I use the Comment function on the right-hand side of the document for queries, suggestions, and explanations.
